Ivan Il’ič is a forty-five-year-old judge, very satisfied with his life, who falls ill with an illness that leads to his death. For Tolstoy, illness is a succession of moods, a set of existential conditions that determine the patient’s life and his relationships with others, with an alternation of hope, despair, loneliness. However, the story does not end in despair. Illness does not leave the loss of hope behind.
